More rational use of appropriate providers and types of care translates into better patient outcomes and decreased costs, which is especially important with common ailments such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, cancer or conditions such as obesity, which can trigger those ailments. If not managed, the treatment of these ailments is typically done on an episodic basis, meaning patients receive treatment only when symptoms are acute, which is always more expensive than providing preventive, managed care.
